MooseWoods History

Moose Woods was an important Indigenous hunting and trade area, with archaeological findings at Moose Woods (currently Whitecap Dakota First Nation) dating back 6000 years. Archaeological artifacts indicate the area’s consistent use b y Indigenous peoples through to the arrival of settlers.

The Moose Woods area refers to the wooded area in the river valley and the sand hills surrounding the community of Whitecap Dakota First Nation. The name “Moose Woods” is recorded in colonial records as early as the eighteenth century and is likely a translation of an Indigenous name for the area.

The Whitecap community was called “Moose Woods Reserve” until the late twentieth century. Missionary and fur trade reports tell of the area’s importance for trade and hunting purposes throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Hudson Bay Company had an outpost here in the late nineteenth century.

When John Lake and others arrived looking for location for an administrative centre for the Temperance Colonization Society, the expedition traveled to Moose Woods. Here, Chief Whitecap advised John Lake on the site best suited for the colony on the trail along the river—the initial site of the future city of Saskatoon, which is in the modern-day neighbourhood of Nutana. In 1879, Chief Whitecap chose this location for his Dakota community when they were forced by the Canadian government to settle onto reserve lands.
